House investigating F1's exclusion of Andretti

The House Judiciary Committee is "launching an investigation" into F1 and its U.S. owner, Liberty Media, to "demand answers about the sport's decision to deny Andretti Global a spot on the grid." Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in a letter accused the sport of engaging in "anticompetitive conduct" by rejecting the American team’s bid to enter F1 in 2025 or 2026. The letter was addressed to Liberty President & CEO Greg Maffei and F1 President & CEO Stefano Domenicali. Jordan demanded documents and communications about the "process for evaluating the entry of new teams" into the sport. Former F1 champion Mario Andretti visited Capitol Hill last Wednesday and spoke at a news conference with lawmakers "to pressure the sport to admit Andretti Global" (NBCNEWS.com, 5/7).

Jordan's letter asserted that delaying Andretti's entry into F1 "for even one year will harm American consumers to benefit failing Formula 1 teams." He has asked for a briefing "as soon as possible and no later than May 21." Last week, several Congress members wrote to F1 asking for answers over the Andretti decision (MOTORSPORT, 5/7).

NFL close to allowing private equity investments

Groups of private equity investors "may soon be allowed to buy as much as 30%" of NFL franchises, as a "special NFL committee is meeting to examine the league’s ownership rules."  Proposals under discussion would let buyout firms "individually acquire" as much as 10% of a team. Talks are "ongoing and the percentages may change." The owners will present their findings in Nashville over three days starting May 20, during the second of four annual league meetings. Under current proposals, those buyers "would have to set up a fund dedicated to NFL team ownership, rather than using a vehicle that invests more broadly" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 5/7).

NFL schedule release set for May 15

By Ben Fischer

The full 2024 NFL schedule is slated to be released at 8pm ET on May 15, six days after teams were originally expecting it, according to a league memo sent this afternoon.

The memo from NFL EVP/Media Distribution Hans Schroeder did not give a reason for the delay. The schedule release had not been officially announced yet, and the league always maintains a degree of flexibility considering the complex nature of developing the schedule. But some teams had been told informally it was coming tomorrow.

Schroeder wrote that more details about activations or other nuances of the plan were expected in the coming days. The league and media rights holders sometimes announce specific high-profile matchups before the full slate is unveiled.

The schedule release has become a key priority for teams and the league in recent years, with teams preparing increasingly sophisticated schedule social content and using it as a starting point for single-game ticket sales.

Michigan hiring Terése Whitehead as NIL Exec GM

By Ben Portnoy

NFLPA
Michigan is set to hire NFLPA VP/Consumer Products & Strategy Terése Whitehead as the school's first in-house “NIL Executive GM” in collaboration with Altius Sports Partners. An official announcement is expected today.

Whitehead, a 1999 Michigan graduate, will spearhead the school's NIL program, leading the department's strategy providing athletes support and resources in the space. She will also serve as the day-to-day contact for stakeholders that include Michigan Sports Properties and U-M's NIL collective, Champions Circle.

During her eight-year run with the NFLPA, Whitehead orchestrated significant global licensing revenue growth for the organization’s for-profit arm and managed a portfolio that generated more than $2.75B in sales. She also previously served as a SVP/Marketing & Brand Development at Tandem Sports + Entertainment, where she led strategic marketing efforts for players that included Basketball HOFers Grant Hill, Ray Allen, Tim Duncan and Women's Basketball HOFer Tamika Catchings.

The ASP GM Program launched in July 2022 and currently includes 17 participating schools.

Penske suspends Cindric, others for IndyCar scandal

Roger Penske
has suspended Team Penske President Tim Cindric and three others for the next two races "for their roles in the cheating scandal that has rocked IndyCar" ahead of the Indianapolis 500. A review done by his general counsel found no "malicious intent by anyone" and "chalked up the incident as a breakdown in internal processes and miscommunication." Penske said, "This is an unfortunate situation and when you’re the leader, you have to take action. We’ve done that and we’re going to move on." Drivers Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin were stripped of their podium finishes at St. Petersburg due to the scandal. Cindric said the software was "inadvertently left on the cars" since last August, when it was installed "to test IndyCar’s upcoming hybrid engine." But the scandal "shook IndyCar," which had not had a disqualification in 29 years (AP, 5/7). The suspension means the four employees will not be allowed to take part in Team Penske’s month of May activities "in any capacity" (RACER, 5/7).

ESPN cuts away from 'Canes-Rangers in final minute

The Hurricanes and Rangers were tied 3-3 and battling in the final minute of Game 2 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs series when the ESPN broadcast "suddenly went dark" with 50 seconds to play in regulation and "accidentally cut to the pregame scenes in Dallas." Game 1 of Stars-Avalanche "was supposed to be nationally televised on ESPNU, not ESPN." But ESPN stayed on the Stars-Avalanche broadcast "for about 20 seconds" before cutting back to Madison Square Garden (SI, 5/7).

ESPN "managed to add some extra stress to the proceedings" for viewers with a "clearly inadvertent broadcast mistake" (USA TODAY, 5/7). That wasn't the only hiccup during the final minutes, as the live ads on the board "temporarily flashed 'Hurricanes win!'" about halfway through the extra period, "despite neither team having scored" (N.Y. POST, 5/7).

Sharks win NHL draft lottery for first time

The Sharks won the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery last night, giving them "the first crack at drafting top prospect Macklin Celebrini" during next month’s NHL Draft in Las Vegas. It’s the first time the Sharks have had the first-overall pick. Sharks GM Mike Grier said after winning, "I was thrilled. It’s a big moment for the organization and the fans here to be able to have the opportunity to draft someone like Macklin. It was a tough year for us. To have this opportunity, we couldn’t be more excited." The Sharks entered the day with the "highest odds of winning" the lottery at 25.5% after ending the NHL season with the league’s worst record at 16-41-7. The team will also come away with the 14th pick in the draft, as they own the Penguins' first-round pick from last summer's Erik Karlsson trade (THE ATHLETIC, 5/7).

This year's draft is the first since 2010 in which the picks "went unchanged through the lottery process." Rounding out the top five after the Sharks in the 2024 draft will be the Blackhawks, Ducks, Blue Jackets and Canadiens. The upstart Utah franchise is poised to pick sixth (SI, 5/7).

Cotton Bowl may be home to unnamed pro team

The Dallas City Council is scheduled to vote today to approve an agreement that would pay management firm Oak View Group $296,000 a year "to make it possible for an unnamed sports team to play their home games" at Cotton Bowl Stadium. Council agenda documents do not name the team or the sport involved, and the proposed resolution describes the $296,000 as "an event subsidy payment" that amounts to $18,500 per game, meaning the team is "expected to have 16 home games." A new women’s pro soccer league, the USL Super League, begins play in August -- and one of the eight teams is based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/6).

Puma sees profit decline in Q1 financial report

Puma reported a decline in first-quarter earnings, posting $93.9M in net profit for the period, compared with $126.1M a year ago, on sales that fell 3.9% on year after they were "hit by unfavorable currency effects." The sportswear company said that the market "continued to be volatile" and that its retail partners "still had elevated stock levels." But despite the decline, the company has "begun to invest into its first brand campaign in a decade" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/8).

The company’s operating expenses had "fallen in the first quarter, inventory levels improved and costs like freight were also down." Footwear sales rose 3.1% to $1.27B, while apparel fell by 2.4% to $653.8M and accessory sales decreased 3.2% to $336.2M. Despite the "flattish results," the brand "confirmed guidance for the year." For all of 2024, Puma "still expects sales revenues to grow in the mid-single digits" (WOMEN'S WEAR DAILY, 5/8).

AI nutrition app Hexis raises $2M in pre-seed round

By Joe Lemire

Hexis
Hexis, an AI-powered personalized sports nutrition app, has raised a $2M pre-seed funding round co-led by athlete-driven venture firm Apex Capital and by Rasmus Ankersen’s Sport Republic, an investment group with controlling interests of soccer clubs in England, France and Turkey.

“Their investment is a major vote of confidence in our mission,” Hexis CEO David Dunne said, adding that the funding will help grow their technology and marketing.

Also participating in the round were Dopamine Sports Ventures as well as several athletes, including Olympic medalists and Tour de France stage winners such as Bob Jungels. Science in Sport CEO Stephen Moon has become a board member, and renowned sports nutritionist James Morton -- who held key roles at Liverpool, Team Sky, INEOS -- is joining Hexis as an advisor.

Co-founded by sports nutritionists Dunne and Sam Impey, who recently served as lead nutritionist for British Cycling, Hexis is built on strategies employed by riders in the pro peloton, several of whom invested in the company and have now introduced it to their teams in advance of the Tour de France.

Some of the riders initially sought individual counseling, “and then they found out we were building technology that could deliver that service,” Dunne said. “In the process of them actually looking for one-to-one support, they invested in the technology.”

Hexis is now expanding more deeply into team sports, with usage by Premier League and Championship soccer clubs and Premiership Rugby clubs. Hexis is close to signing at least two NBA teams, and the investment by Sport Republic will lead to the deployment of the platform across its portfolio of soccer clubs: Southampton FC, Valenciennes FC and Göztepe SK. The CEO of Sport Republic is Ankersen, who pioneered data-driven strategies while helping lead Brentford FC to its first Premier League promotion in 74 years and FC Midtjylland to three Danish League titles.

“Hexis’ athlete management platform allows our football club nutritionists to become more efficient, focusing less on administration and instead spend more time on strategic and value-added tasks for players’ nutrition,” Ankersen wrote in an email. “The AI-fueled Hexis nutrition engine, creating personalized meal plans based on actual individual consumption, provides the players with real-time and more accurate fuel recommendations and insights.”

Dopamine Sports Venture’s founding partners include a longtime research and innovation lead at Manchester United, Warren Gregson, and a former C-level Catapult exec, Barry McNeill

CLT Sports Foundation to run free parlay contest

By Bill King

The non-profit charged with attracting and operating sporting events in Charlotte will run a free-to-play parlay contest around results from three Memorial Day weekend events, hoping to piggy-back on the state’s recent adoption of sports betting to elevate awareness. Operated by the Charlotte Sports Foundation, the Queen City Parlay contest invites entrants to predict the total goals scored in an MLS game between Charlotte FC and Philadelphia United, the total time in NASCAR’s Coca Cola 600 and the fastest times in the women’s and men’s divisions of the Meck Mile, a street race and festival the group will launch this year. Winning entrants will be selected randomly, with tickets and gear as prizes. The Charlotte Sports Foundation, Charlotte FC and Charlotte Motor Speedway will donate $1 per entry, up to $15,000, to Veterans Bridge Home, a local non-profit. The contest, which is not associated with a sportsbook, runs through May 24 at QueenCityParlay.com.

Morning Hot Reads: Keep It Going

YAHOO SPORTS goes with the header, "Please save 'Inside the NBA.'" Monday’s edition of "Inside the NBA" was "memorable because it wasn’t particularly memorable;" this is what the show is "seemingly every night -- entertaining, informative, opinionated, unpredictable, hysterical, authentic, smart and fun." This was just another example, not an "all-timer like when Charles Barkley was challenged to a footrace by a 69-year-old ref he had declared too old, or when he caused an uproar by claiming there were no good looking women in San Antonio" or even when the show would "deftly delve into politics or social issues or pop culture." No, what made Monday special is that it "might be one of the last editions of the greatest sports show ever created and arguably one of the best television shows as well."
